1.5 Tesla or 3 Tesla — what the difference actually means

Tesla is the unit of magnetic field strength. A 3T magnet is twice as strong as a 1.5T, and that extra signal buys finer detail. Stronger is not automatically better for every patient or every question, and a centre that owns only one of the two will tend to tell you the one they own is the right one. Ask which field strength your scan will run on, and why that one for your problem.

Handles the large majority of clinical work: routine brain, whole spine, knee, shoulder, hip, abdomen and MRCP. Lower specific absorption rate means less tissue heating, which matters for long studies and for patients with certain MR-conditional implants. Bore designs are often wider, which helps larger and claustrophobic patients.

Arrive 15 minutes early

Arrival & preparation

Registration takes a few minutes, then a technologist re-checks the safety form in person. This second check is deliberate: people remember implants and old injuries when asked face to face.

You change into a gown and leave all metal, cards and electronics in a locker. If a cannula is needed for contrast, it goes in now.

20–45 minutes

The scan itself

You lie on the table and a receiver coil is positioned over the area being imaged. You get earplugs or headphones — the gradient coils are genuinely loud, a rhythmic knocking and buzzing — and a squeeze-ball that stops everything the instant you press it.

The table moves into the bore. The technologist speaks to you between sequences. Your only job is to stay still.

Why the same scan is priced differently across the city

Four variables drive almost all of the spread: field strength, whether contrast is used, how many body regions are covered in one sitting, and whether the reporting radiologist is in-house or an outsourced overnight service.

A quote that looks unusually low is usually excluding one of those four. Ask which one.

How to prepare for your MRI scan

Preparation for most MRI scans is minimal, but the few things that do matter, matter a great deal. Getting these right is the difference between a scan that answers your doctor's question and one that has to be repeated.

What to wear

Loose clothing with no metal — no zips, hooks, underwired bras, studs or metallic prints. Many fabrics contain silver thread that can heat in the magnet. We provide a gown, and for most scans you will be asked to change into one regardless.

Metal, implants and devices

Remove jewellery, watches, spectacles, hairpins, dentures, hearing aids and body piercings. Tell us in advance about a pacemaker or defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, neurostimulator, insulin pump, drug-infusion port, metallic heart valve, joint replacement, surgical plates or screws, or any history of metal fragments in the eye from grinding or welding work.

Some of these are absolute contraindications; many are MR-conditional and simply need the right protocol. The point is that we need to know before you enter the room, not after.

Eating, drinking and medication

For brain, spine and joint MRI, eat and take your medicines normally. For abdominal MRI and MRCP, fast for four to six hours so the gallbladder is distended and bowel motion is reduced. For pelvic MRI you may be asked to arrive with a partially full bladder. We tell you which applies when you book — do not guess.

If contrast is being used

Gadolinium contrast is given through a small cannula in the arm. Tell us about kidney disease, dialysis, previous contrast reactions or any drug allergy, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding. A recent creatinine or eGFR result is often requested; if you do not have one, we can arrange it on site.

If you are claustrophobic or anxious

Say so when you book, not on the day. We can plan a shorter protocol, position you feet-first where the anatomy allows, fit a mirror so you can see out of the bore, play music through headphones, and in many cases allow a family member to stay in the room with you. You hold a squeeze-ball that stops the scan immediately. For severe anxiety, a mild oral sedative prescribed by your referring doctor is a reasonable option — arrange a driver if you take one.

What to bring

Your prescription or referral letter, photo ID, insurance or TPA details if applicable, and — this one is genuinely important — any previous scans, films or CDs of the same body part. Comparison with prior imaging changes the report more often than most patients expect.

What is the cost of an MRI scan in Dehradun?

Typically ₹3,500 to ₹9,000 for a single-region study, depending on the body part, the scanner used and whether contrast is required. Plain 1.5T brain, knee and single-level spine studies sit at the lower end; 3T multiparametric prostate, whole spine and contrast-enhanced studies sit above it. How long does an MRI scan take?

Most studies run 15 to 45 minutes of actual scanning. A routine brain or knee MRI is usually 20 to 30 minutes, whole spine 40 to 55, and contrast adds roughly ten minutes plus cannulation time. Budget 60 to 90 minutes at the centre in total once registration, changing and screening are included.

Is an MRI scan safe? Does it use radiation?

MRI uses a strong static magnetic field and radio-frequency pulses. There is no ionising radiation at all, which is why it can be repeated as often as clinically needed and is preferred in children and in pregnancy after the first trimester where imaging is unavoidable.

The real risks are mechanical and thermal rather than radiological: ferromagnetic objects becoming projectiles, implanted devices malfunctioning, and tissue heating during long sequences. All three are managed by proper screening, which is why we are insistent about it.

Do I need a doctor's prescription?

Strongly recommended, and for contrast studies effectively required. The prescription tells the radiologist what clinical question they are answering, which determines the sequences, the planes and whether contrast is justified. An MRI ordered without that context frequently produces a technically fine scan that does not answer the question the patient actually came with.

When will I get my report?

Routine studies are reported the same day, typically within four to six hours. Emergency and inpatient studies are prioritised. You receive a digital report and images on WhatsApp or email, plus printed films, a CD and a signed report at the centre.

What is the difference between 1.5T and 3T?

Field strength. A 3T magnet gives roughly twice the signal-to-noise ratio of a 1.5T, which can be spent on finer detail or shorter scans. It is preferred for small brain lesions, pituitary and inner-ear imaging, prostate mpMRI, cartilage and peripheral nerve work.

1.5T is not a lesser option. It produces less artefact around metal implants, has a lower specific absorption rate, and remains the standard for the majority of brain, spine and joint imaging. The right answer depends on your clinical question and your implant history, not on which machine sounds more impressive.

Can I have an MRI if I am claustrophobic?

Yes, in almost all cases. Tell us when you book so we can plan for it: shortest viable protocol, feet-first positioning where the anatomy allows, a mirror to see out of the bore, music through headphones, a companion in the room where permitted, and a squeeze-ball that halts the scan instantly. For severe claustrophobia, a mild oral sedative prescribed by your referring doctor works well — arrange someone to drive you home.

Can I have an MRI with a pacemaker or metal implant?

It depends entirely on the device. Many modern pacemakers and defibrillators are MR-conditional and can be scanned under a specific protocol with cardiology support. Older devices often cannot. Cochlear implants and cerebral aneurysm clips need individual assessment against the manufacturer's documentation.

Most orthopaedic implants — joint replacements, plates, screws, rods — are safe, though they cause local artefact. Bring your implant card if you have one. If a device rules out MRI, a CT scan is frequently a workable alternative and we will tell you so.
